[Guy Fawkes] day is celebrated in the United Kingdom on November 5th every year to remember the Gunpowder Plot of Guy Fawkes. A man who's attempt to "blow up" the Houses of Parliament by loading barrels of gunpowder in the cellars was foiled... In this day and age he would be referred to as a terrorist. In the true British style of the time, he was hung, drawn & quatered... Then burned at a stake.
Every year since, on the night of November 5th, British folk have gone outside with their gunpowder to blow up stuff... yay!

Talked to a friend and he didn't like it too much, since he felt it was loosely based on (or ripped off) a better book. But books are always better than movies, so I'm not surprised he didn't like the movie as much then.
