Giants and Magical Attacks

I guess everyone knew this already except me the low int mage but I had been up in the Ivory Tower. I was on 8 and I keep counter magic on up there in case Demon wants to spawn near me and then attempt to kill me in a hit. Anyway, so I had counter on still when I left and went to kill giants and this happened...

so....is it earth magic? And yes I'm talking regular giants, not the boss one.
