I have always thought pc >

I have always thought pc > mac. From an IT standpoint it just makes much more sense on paper and ease of use for the general populous. The vast range of hardware helps keep costs low in comparison to the proprietary software / hardware. I will admit though that I have seen great things in the graphics / video editing areas available to the macs.

Actually, from an IT

Actually, from an IT managerial standpoint - we're in the process of switching our users from PC to Mac. The overall differences in costs are saving us about $300 per unit. Inclusive of software licensing.

We can buy Apple notebooks plus Windows Licenses (if necessary) with MS Office and other productivity tools cheaper than we can aquire equal quality hardware & support from MS OEM's.

Our IT team is now solely using Mac-based computers; In our industry most things are Unix-based, we merely need Unix desktops running MS Office. Et voilla - the perfect desktop for us.

That is a common

Chryses's picture

That is a common misconception. The IT guys I know (the exception being the ones who are just Windows Fan Boys and don't want to learn anything else) much prefer working with Macs. To quote one of them: "What's not to love? Everything is plug and play, the system never crashes and since you can't effect anything on the system level without first logging in as the root user, viruses are nearly impossible to get. I do half the work, never get calls at home; and the boss assumes I'm working just as hard as I was before."

Ditto for my work

Valerius's picture

Ditto for my work Chryses...our campus may be a Windoze based campus and we certainly force most departments into standard Dell/Win combinations for replication (simplicty of support), the fact is that almost every single one of us actually working in IT/CS use Mac Powerbooks because of the sheer reliability...sure, they may cost a few hundred dollars more than a comparably equipped pc, but they virtually never crash, and time really is money, even in higher education.

PC FTW!

PC FTW!
