Yes it is stealing however on private servers they dont have bot problems like we have here because they actually do their jobs and have more input and control over what goes on in the game moreso than nci and all their levels of red tape.

The download and usage of the gameclient is bound to agreements. Since the agreement is violated by those user, the download is forfeit and stealing per se.

So, hosting and using is stealing. Plain an simple.

They dont have the bots because you can buy everything for 0Adena at pandora shop (theres a few vids on YouTube)

It's still early, obviously, but frankly I am surprised by the results so far of this poll. I am now surprised, however, that the people who think it is stealing are - by a 3 to 1 ratio - more willing to put their name to that opinion.

To the letter of the law, playing a private server might be more akin to receiving stolen property than actually stealing, although I could certainly make a compelling case that it is stealing in the eyes of the law as well.

Practically speaking, however, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind playing the private server is stealing. When someone rips and file shares a game, the person on the sending and receiving end are both stealing. The same is true here.

For whatever reason, society has gotten to the point that stealing intellectual property (music, games, movies, etc.) is large accepted.

Gotta remember, lineage is almost a complete copy of NetHack... So... did NC steal from nethack?

But private servers.. there are loop holes in the system. It is very legal if set up correctly. I couldn't tell you exactly how or what to do to make it legal. But my best friend has a lin2 server that is legal and NC can't do anything about it.... Would I ever play a private server? no thx. I wouldn't waste my time..

and to be technical... "stealing intellectual property (music, games, movies, etc.)"... it's not called stealing, it's borrowing... And people have been legally doing that for decades now. Just today's society are filled with too many greedy people that will sue sue sue because this pathetic country allows it.

I couldn't tell you what site I read some of that off of, but someone from the lineage boards showed me the copyright facts and stuff.... And it makes complete sense...

I think if there is anything being stolen or borrowed from NC/Lineage. It would be just the interface really. And there are tons of games with similar interfaces. UO, Diablo, etc...

no matter how you slice it, it is stealing. if you want to delude yourself into thinking you are just borrowing that new cd you got from a file sharing program, rationalize away! i'll be down @ my local music store BUYING a few cd's today ^^.after that i'll BUY a few dvd's, then after that i will PAY my lin bill, so i can log on tonight :>

well i haven't checked out the laws and stuff in a long time and every state is different, but as far as i know. you are atleast allowed to download songs but can only keep it for 24 hours... after that, you "must" delete it.... And with Itunes and napster out there making you pay minimum for the digital songs. once you buy it there, it becomes legal. and u can share it on like 5 computers of yours... The law is so wide open. The bands really don't make the money from cd sales anyways. Why you think people are starting to do what radiohead did and letting everyone dl their music for free now?

One thing i will say tho, is that due to private servers our population is low due to the fact that ppl who want to play lineage but dont want to deal w/ NC can play on a priv server, since its a cheap alternative for them..

If private servers didnt exist, those with the lineage crave would definetly sign up again, not all but some for sure

Copyright is copyright. I've had photos "appropriated" from both my personal and work websites. I have no doubt that is stealing, especially when they are used for commercial purposes, and I don't see where this in any different. NC's work is being appropriated without recompense, and in the end, that can hurt us all, game designers and players alike (we NEED NC to be solvent).

A lot of it are people who want instant gratification. They want uber stuff, uber levels without having to put the work in. It's like little kids who don't get their toy/candy/milk/pacifier the second they think they should have it and throw a hissy fit.

I feel the same way about people who buy adena, buy accounts, etc. They don't want to put the work in, so they do it the lazy way.

What about the people that want to play or enjoyed the game but know it hasn't changed in years. The terrible customer service, the lack of decent bug-free updates, the answer to the permanent harrassment or bot problem, the lack of having 20 hours a day to play for 5 years to catch up, the lack of 1 bajillion adena to buy anything...

I lived for this game and played when TI was the entire thing up through a year after dark elves. Before crazy antics, before level 70s, when a few GMs (02) and others would actually play with you and chat. Lineage is so far from what it once was that many are unhappy with how their favorite game turned out. And the fact that it's the same price it has been even though support for the game is very low, many other games utilize updated policies and graphics is crazy. Heck, originally lineage was FREE. When it switched to pay to play, many were upset already and that was many many years ago.

I agree that creating something, putting money and effort into it warrant payment. Especially if someone makes a living that way (game development, or music/art etc.) but when the price or service becomes ill-linked to what people are receiving, something must change. I feel artists should be making money for music made, directors and actors should be paid for a job well done and if many people like what they do, by all means charge for it. But when cds cost $20 and going to the movies with a small popcorn and drink cost $20, we have a problem.

Part of the problem is stealing and so "prices have to go up" but not much because millions already participate, part is due to inflation which can be argued is a construct and doesn't need to increase as much as it does, and part of it is greed. Not on the part of the consumer or taker, but provider. Do you deserve to make 15 million dollars for doing a movie? I think not. The imbalance of wealth for entertainment in this country is at a rediculously astounding all time high.

If people weren't paid such INSANELY exorbitant salaries, then everyone who works around them wouldn't be paid crazy amounts, then consumers could pay accurate prices. I know in a capitalist system, people will pay what they will pay but it's getting out of hand. Way way too out of hand. Those who pay for faulty systems to have some fun in their life are tired of it. Yes, you should pay for these activities, but why so much? And to say if one doesn't make enough to have fun in life or be entertained, how can we justify denying them, without changing the system?

I still visit the movies and buy some occasionally, i still pick up cds now and then and listen to the radio but download. Because it got to a point that even I, who went to theatres sometimes bi-weekly, couldn't be encouraged to go anymore due to rising costs. Entertainers make more than teachers, blue collar workers, your food service providers, and many other positions in our society that I hold ten times more valuable. For these and other reasons, many including myself have become disillusioned with the state our economy is and the morale line is blurred. Very blurred. So much so that I have a hard time seeing what's right and what's wrong when supposed "bad guys" are doing good, and good doing bad.

The people voting no are low-middle class who like to enjoy life and pay what they can. The people that enjoy the story of robin hood because it speaks of their life. The people who voted no are the sheriff's of nottingham =) Or those that are very steadfast in their ideology and beliefs. Which is something I can definitely respect but also pity. If things were % income based and not flat rates, I would pay for everything. If I could pay a portion of my salary which was equal to someone else' who wanted to enjoy the same event, I would. I guess that's socialism though. I feel we all do a job in society and if some are more difficult or more dangerous than others, yeah maybe they should make a bit more... but not 1000x more.

All men are clearly not equal anymore so I for one (to quote rage against the machine) "am going to take the power back".

P.S. I guess I don't even play lineage anymore but frequent these blogs and sites on occasion, and private servers suck only because of how faulty,unreliable, and easy they are.

I think it is stealing but at the same time if nc would do there job and ban the bots then ppls wouldn't go and play on a private server. It gets very old when the bots hit lvl52+ with in a few weeks and the rest of us do it the hard way. If nc isn't gonna ban the bots then maybe they should just start letting everyone bot. -.-

Well, I am wondering if the movement of people from Lineage US servers to private servers will become a mass exodus should LOA be merged into Dep and Ken servers. LOA, from all the posts I've read over the last couple years, is more heavily saturated with bots than Dep/Ken (course their numbers are greater in general). Bringing all those bots in addition to the legit players will have an interesting affect on existing community in Dep/Ken.

I pay for my Dep account (for nearly 7 years) and plan on keeping it until they bring the server down, but I have tried a p-server, and to be honest, other than some of the lag issues, it is run as a very tight ship. This GM doesn't charge players anything to play, and he takes no guff from people who hack/bot. Basically, you get caught, you're gone. Although, nothing is 'handed' to you, you can level quickly, (you still have to hunt for stuff - money to buy things), getting 52 is easy as well as acquiring equipment. Overall it was more fun in the short term then much of my Dep playing these last couple years.

I am not condoning it or encouraging playing p-servers in any way, but at the same time, it appears these servers (each run by their own rules of game management) are filling a demand that exists, that NC appears either incapable or unwilling to provide - a bot-free, hack-free (or limited) experience for players.

I don't know the answer for this issue because like many in the Lineage community, it is deeply rooted in the rotten existence of bots and hackers. As time goes on, I become more and more jaded about NC's response to cheating, and I don't see that changing at all.
