I made mention of the idea on Ken global yesterday and it seemed to get a rather strong positive reaction to an idea for new items.
Amulets that grant 1/2 cost spells. Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater heal, Strength, Enchant Weapon, Dexterity, and Haste are already represented, why not add more spells to the list? Bless Weapon, Vampiric Touch, Sunburst, Call Lightning, Turn Undead, Cancel, etc etc. However, the amulet only grants one spell. Of course, you could add in higher-level versions of these amulets that grant multiple spells (for example an amulet of elements that gives you sunburst, eruption, cone of cold, and call lightning), or an Amulet of Curses that grants half cost curse spells (or maybe even removes the mgem cost from them, since the real factor on the frequency of use is the lawful cost now, not the mgem O.o).
It just occurred to me as I was hunting in my usual hybrid fashion that this was a completely untapped potential item market of great value and interest. What does everyone else think?
Wait...what??

Not shooting the idea down,
Not shooting the idea down, but this has too much ease of exploit, in my opinion.
Most of the current 'half mp' cost items were designed to assist classes with low mp pools in buffing themselves or their pets.
But imagine every mage running around 51+ with half mp TU... You basically just doubled every mages level speed. (They bumped the MP cost of TU from 13mp to 20mp for a reason...)
Mages will dominate from this, melee classes get basically nothing from it. (Kind of like KG ring being +1int one day, then +1str the next... Mages got a lot from theirs, most melees got nothing from theirs.)
I think we already have an item that fulfills this desire with equal negatives to keep it balanced.
Blank Scrolls.
Got Blog?
As you said, how is this
As you said, how is this different from spell scrolls? Instead of paying money and no mana with a chance to fail, they spend 1/2 mana. It wouldn't change anything fundamentally. My beef is that creating spell scrolls is restricted to mages (yeah I'm sure they're thrilled about that) and doesn't include the one spell I most want...sunburst.
Yeah, I'm a fire elf and it's a selfish reason...but it's a valid point. Only 1/2 the mid-tier elemental spells are represented by level 5 scrolls: Call Lightning and Cone of Cold.
Lastly, it comes with a major cost-benefit consideration. It's an amulet. That's a MAJOR equipment slot for a mage. 1 (or 2) int or 1/2 cost TU is nearly equal in value I would think. That's why I chose that slot for this equipment, because I knew it would always be in conflict with other major mage items (better all spells or cheaper 1 spell).
Of course, I see your side of it. However, we never discussed rarity. An Amulet of Turn Undead could be as rare as a KV sword or the like. Meaning only a handful of mages would ever get one...unless NC does it's usual 2-step event dance and hands one out to every mage on the server.
Wait...What??
Hmmm, there are blank
Hmmm, there are blank scrolls o.O Even a knight can run around with tons of VT-scrolls - no mana needed :)
Such ammies would only make sense for lvl 6+ spells but then I see balance issue...I see elves running around with Destroy Ammy, Bliz-Ammy and Tornado-Ammy :P
Actually there's a natural
Actually there's a natural counter balance to this. Without LineX (because it unhides all spells levels and classes), you can't access spells/abilities that your class can't naturally attain (exception Magic Helms/Circlets). This is why the KG ring that gave the strength spell a while back didn't work for everyone (particularly Dark Elves). Besides that, I wasn't thinking of them going past level 6. Above level 6 and you are talking about the mages bread and butter spells. They should be full cost and restricted to mages only. That's what they were balanced around. Level 5 and below spells are already available in spells scrolls and as such are available in an unlimited quantity, however certain key spells are not represented at the level 5 cut off.
Why not do a "similar but different" approach is all I'm saying.
Wait...What??
Last I checked mages bread
Last I checked mages bread and butter was lesser heal, VT and TU... all of which are under lv6... 6 and over are their AOE and PvP spells....

Hmm...good point. Thought,
Hmm...good point. Thought, that has more to do with the fact that higher level heal spells don't scale up as rapidly as lesser heal does, sucking up more mp for less total healing (lesser heal and gheal are equal for me right now, just that lesser heal requires 4 casts instead of 1). However, 7 and up are spells that ONLY mages get is mostly what I meant.
Wait...What??
heh friends gheal heals
heh friends gheal heals slower than his lheal, cause the delay is longer and lheal heals so much :o
