A player-made event idea

Chryses's picture

This is an idea I have been thinking about for over a year now. I always put
it on the back burner because, well, it seemed like an awful lot of work and no
matter how much I tried to flesh out the details, I couldn't come up with even
a functional model for the event.

To that end ... I thought I would post my thoughts here and see if anyone
had any thoughts on whether or not it could be fun and/or successful and if
there might be any suggestions to improve upon the details.

Basically, Lineageone.com would play host to a player vs. player tournament.
It could be a series of one-on-one fights. It could be an every-man-for-himself
fight with the goal of being the last man (or woman) standing. It could be some
sort of a team fight.

It seems there would be three options for location – a castle, an arena or Dream
Island
.

There would probably be some sort of an entry fee with all of the entry fees
being paid back in the form of prize money.

So I have a lot of questions …

Could it work?

Are there any potential pratfalls I should watch out for?

Should there be an entry fee? How much should it be?

Which format would be the most fun or most interesting?

Is there anything that should not be allowed?

How could we accommodate spectators?

Should there be a fee to be a spectator?

How could we differentiate spectators from competitors?

How could we guarantee spectators don’t interfere?

Well, if the PvP arena on TI

Well, if the PvP arena on TI was a bit bigger, it would be an ideal place to hold such an event, and since the walls block line of sight, you don't have to worry about outside interference. Just tossing that out there.

Wait...What??

DI would be the best option

DI would be the best option for an all out battle royal. It would have to be teams, because mage and elf would destroy any knight or de simply by healing until their pots run out. Teams of four  fight it out on one of the platforms in DI. TI arena is nice because people could watch from outside the fence, but it is too small for more then 2 teams.

We have done these in our

We have done these in our pledge, with other pledges, and against other pledges... at various times. And they work perfectly then... for one reason... They are secluded to the participants only and outsiders cant get in to watch or potentially mess it up.

I could see so many things going wrong with this. I forsee many  matches having to be redone, because of someone outside coming in and messing it up. You simply cant control that, unless you hold it in an arena that you can block off like TI, but then it is too small for a good match.  Castles are difficult to hold a match like this in because of setting invisible boundaries they cant cross. If you open the whole field up, itll take too long to finish because of how many will hide in invis. If you set boundaries, its hard to police them. Specially with invis in play.

It would be a great idea, but so many kinks to work out.

Setting a specific time frame for it to take place, and sticking to it. Someone that set aside 3hours to participate, but has to leave after that three hours, will be disappointed that it went for 4hours instead of 3 and thus lost out on their entry fee and potential prize money.  It would be hard to set a specific time frame AND stick to it, because of the potential for outside influence. Rogue people coming in and cancelling, pining, mapling, any number of things they could do to interfere and suffer no consequence for.

If you do go about doing it, remember to make sure everyone leaves their pledges.

If you are in the same pledge as someone you are fighting, you can cancel them 100%, you can maple them 100%, among other things, that could skew the battle.

If you are not going to make the participants leave their pledges, you have to consider these items and forbid them from use. (Cancel, Maple, etc) Which puts the mages at a disadvantage taking away some of their most important PvP spells.

You need to consider limitations of consumables (maybe set a certain number and type of pots, certain number of mgems/sgems/stones) Maybe even be the one to provide those. One match we did was in teams and the person holding the match provided the team a set amount of consumables, to divide among the team. The team themselves had to decide who got how many potions, who got how many mgems. You need to make sure everyone is stocked and ready to go at the start of the match or they are out. You cant be waiting around because some guy forgot something he has to return to storage for, making everyone and every match after that wait.

You may also want to think about spell scrolls... Can they be used, cant they? How can you police it? I ended up winning one because I made liberal use of CM scrolls, which at the end of the match was determined to be unfair. We hadnt thought about them prior to the match.

These are all the problems we ran into in the ones we held.

Good luck and I hope it goes well, but I cant imagine itll go off without problems. Not on the Ken Server I know at least.

Vala's lair I think is

Vala's lair I think is combat-zone isn't it? would be easy to block off entrance to, and give plenty room to move around.

The IDEAL solution is

Chryses's picture

The IDEAL solution is obviously the Giran Arena. Spectators could enter in view mode and not be able to do anything to help or hurt others.

However, at that point is ceases being a player-run event and would require NC involvement. That's unlikely so I have not really been considering it.

You all bring up the same problems I have constantly encountered when I attempting to firm up the plans.

It might simply not be possible without some sort of NC involvement.

could do it in dragon lair

PyroAmos's picture

could do it in dragon lair fairly easily, if I remember correct and they are combat zones... they are easy to block off with 4-5 people, you can have 4 of the people running it inside video-capturing fight to post for spectators (for 2v2 that is 1 person running event/video capturing per player), although they could not follow them when they invis, there will always be someone with the people that are not invis so you will get all the combat video-captured, to be edited together later... of corse if everyone invis/coi then, it would be hard to video-capture, but, oh well :P

I wouldn't do 1v1 unless it was limited to same class vs same class, as class imbalances would make it a joke... even same class vs same class would be kinda ghey for melee, pot carry contest, although for mage/elf could be interesting... I think 2v2 or 3v3 would be best, something like 5v5 would just be to many people.

Oh yeah, BTW if you couldn't

PyroAmos's picture

Oh yeah, BTW if you couldn't tell, I don't believe spectators should watch the fight live... should be video-captured and posted... if it is popular, you'll have 100+ spectators there, just like at sieges, just lagging the hell out of it. video capture it, and post it is much better option.

Oh, 2nd comment on my own

PyroAmos's picture

Oh, 2nd comment on my own post, lol.... I like dragon lair better than arena, as arena has no cover, and is 1 screen in size.... dragon lair would offer more moving around, invis would be practical, you could get out of line of site of people, ect, it would be less of a hit-hit-hit-hit over fight, and involve more moving around and real fighting.

also, even doing it in dragon lair, it would still be really really good to have a little NC support on it, as video-captured fight by GM/monitor where you can see invis people, would be alot better than player recorded where you can't see them when they invis, but, that would req them either giving a player or two temp-monitor account (or if they can, a buff to see invis people like monitors do), or them video recording it themselves, neither of which I see as very likly.

oh, and only thing I think

PyroAmos's picture

oh, and only thing I think that should not be allowed is resurection... once someone dies they are out, other than that all spells/summons/potion/scrolls are free game.

You would have to put up a

PyroAmos's picture

You would have to put up a good prize for winner, and promote it well, to get enough participation to be worth it though....

you could also sub-divide into level brackets, if you get enough people, so people that are not lv70+ can compete (I.E> 50-55 bracket, 55-60 bracket, 60-70 bracket, 70+ bracket), but you would have to have alot of entrants to do that.... although if you say you are going to do that, alot more people might participate (as I doubt any level 55~60 knight, I.E> ME, would enter a contest like this vs lv70+ chars, but if its in a bracket, I would proably maybe do it)

With all this said... it

PyroAmos's picture

With all this said... it would proably be a flop, if it it wasn't at least partially sponsered by NC... unless you or NC going to pony up 50~100mil or so prize money to winner, most people wouldn't bother with it, and I doubt you could charge enough on entrance fee to make back the money for prize (MIGHT be able to charge like 5mil, at a maximum, which would still req 10~20 teams to enter to break even)

My latest thinking is a

Chryses's picture

My latest thinking is a free-for-all type event. It would open the door for large pledges or alliances to dominate everyone else, but hey that's part of the game. It seems that would be the easiest of a list of very hard things to do.

On the arena questions ... would your cocnern continue IF it were possible to get use of the Giran arena? (I should note I don't thik it would be).

I wouldn't like arena... to

yeh... since everyone except

PyroAmos's picture

yeh... since everyone except non-wind elves are as fast as knights now, wouldn't be able to hit anyone, just chase them around.... Prolly end up using bow zzz. They need to give knight a stun-like ability that lasts longer than 0.5seconds that doesn't prevent actions, just prevents the person from moving.

DEs would have it worst though... anytime against a team with an elf in it, erase-cancel, repeat 'til they're outta mana, and they're done... elf/mage, elf/elf or maybe a mage/mage team would win, most likly a elf/mage, as erase-destroy is such a nice finisher, and with erase, mage can get off some GG spells like Decay-Pot, silence on 150+ mr..... a earth and wind elf could be deadly to... ebind on one person and t-shot spam the other, try to drop 'em.... would be interesting.... proably I think earth elf/mage would win, or maybe a wind elf/mage.

......... are you serious?

FieldsOfLove's picture

......... are you serious?

#1, this event has already been used and was VERY successful.

#2, I've been asking for this "deathmatch" event on lineage boards for over 4 years now since pretty much the last deathmatch we had....

It'd be in Giran arena, Monitor02 was the host/ref, and another lineage fan site was the site that hosted this event.

Very simple and easy event, and was tons of fun.....

If u want more details on how it was held and what all it included, i'll post later if you respond to this

I would love more details

Chryses's picture

I would love more details about how it worked. I can on with Mac beta so that event pre-dated me, and I have only heard a few vague stories about how it worked.

Keep in mind, however, we would be severely more limited in what we could do if this were to be made a player-run event. There are simply things a monitor could do that we could not.

If you post how that event worked, and we get an out-crying of people saying how great it would be, I would be happy to start a poll, lead a drive, do whatever it takes to get NC involved on a level necessary to make it happen.

where to begin.... Well, i

FieldsOfLove's picture

where to begin....

Well, i can't tell you what fan site held it... World of Lineage I believe... but anyways, GameMaster02(not monitor as i said earlier) was the GM that made the rules and made sure all the duels went down the way they were planned.

The 1:1 duels was a fight to the death between the same classes. Each char got full buffs and stood at the furthest corner from each other. When the GM said go, they walked to the middle and went at it. The winner  of course was whoever lived and was granted like 10k adena.

At the time, everyone was 48-49... No one used polies except mages due to slow swings and stuff.

You could use any gear you wanted(bow/sword), and fought anyway you wanted or needed. Only exception was NO POTS ALLOWED or disqualified.

At the time, the 1:1 duels consisted of a lot of Knights, and I think 1-2 elf duels.... When the mages were up, it was a 4 person free for all. Than after that, was a free for all for anyone that wanted to participate.... Was like 200+ people inside Giran arena. A lot of people teamed up to win it, but that was kinda cheap :P

It was a blast and they tried to do another Deathmatch like it a little while later involving teams of how ever many people you wanted but the combined lvl between the chars was 100 or 120... dont remember anymore. I don't remember what happened with that. But ever since.... We've had no DM except the ones against Mops...

I've been wanting another DM for so long now cause it'd be fun to see how well some people would do. But with all the morphs, high lvl chars and such. Might be wise to do like, 2 duels for each fight. One without pots and one with pots. Cause I know the 25 con delvl/releveled would win hands down... But with pots, you put their stats to the test.

But anyways, need anymore info. Let me know but thats just a nice summary of how it went down.

On top of that, would be nice to have Lito here too....
