NCA has ruffled the
NCA has ruffled the community's feathers a bit lately and some of us might be little grumpy that could be the reason no one has given any opinnions for you yet. But I can as well be the first one even I do not currently have an active account.
First of all, welcome to the Lineage and I can only hope you like the game. It ain't the newest and fanciest in the market, but it is still able to offer you a lot of fun, that I'm sure of. There has been some serious problems with bots and hackers and I would not have recommended the game too much couple or so months back, but happily they have managed to battle that problem quite well lately I've heard. The start can be a bit rough when trying to save adena (the money unit in Lineage) for the basic gear, but when you get the hang of it and start finding some good people, you'll do just fine.
If you haven't decided your server yet, I'd propably recommend Ken Rauhel to start from and get the feeling for the game as it's not very populated and does not have too many bots, has nice people in there and is the only non-PvP server. There are still sieges and some combat zones where PvP also happens in Ken, but player versus player fights are generally voluntary in Ken. After you've got the hang of the game, you can either stay in Ken, or if liking the possibility to participate in field PvP, move either to LoA (Lands of Aden) or Dep (Depardieu). LoA is having the largest population of all the servers mixed with peace hunters and PvP'ers, where Dep is the hardcore PvP server of the three. There is also Test server where you can try out the newest content, even a bit buggy at the moment, but the general playing is easier in there with better drops and faster experience, so that might also be a decent option to get a faster feeling for the game. But if you plan to play a bit longer, I'd recommend some of the live servers (Ken Rauhel, Depardieu or Lands of Aden).
As a first character elf is usually good option to start with. Elves are experts with bows and so you have easier time saving adena to upgrade your gear when most of the monsters does not even get to hit you. Otherwise you tend to waste lots of adena to buy healing potions and that's why dark elves, knights and royals can be a bit rough at first, at least if you try to melee with them. Mages on the other hand can be utterly boring to start with if you have no adena to get some mana regeneration gear. Most of mages' mana regeneration is gear based because of the bad original design, so equipped only with the starting gear you spend most of the time waiting and regenerating your mana. So elf with bow is something I recommend to make at first. I would put status points into 18 Con and the last point into Dex, but many of here most likely would recommend also 18 Dex elf as a starter character. Both of them are good to start with, but 18 Con is something you want to make if you plan to play a bit longer. After getting your feet wet in the starting areas and finally get teleported out to mainland, you might want to ask if some nice player could hand you out a nice +0 hunter bow so you can get the joyrneys in the Aden rolling.
Hopefully you find some nice people to play with and give you some aiding hand in what ever server you decide to start in. So again, good luck and welcome into the lands of Aden :)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that aside from this site, you might also want to check Lineage database for english info about quests and stuff. It might not be totally accurate in some of it's information, but it surely is the best you can find in english for this game.
Of course there's also the official Lineage site, but that's poorly managed, oudated and some of their guides does not even work. You might want to read the message boards in there for the latest info if you decide to start playing this game, but the account creation for the official boards has been broken for long time now. That is ought to be fixed soon with the new upcoming boards, so after that also new people can join the discussions.Of course the most important stuff handled in official site are usually posted also in here, so LineageOne is probably the site to keep an eye on for now.

wow thanks allot for
wow thanks allot for this.
its allot of information to take in :)
well advise seems a little similar to what i was given when i joined Lineage 2 a few years back.so i think il enjoy the game :)
so is the bot problem in L as bad as L2.
also how is the grind compared to L2. i used to enjoy it in L2. but the vitality system killed the game for me. years oh hard work kinda seemed wasted as people could reach where i was in a few moths, reather than years.
if i do enjoy this game il be here for atleast 6months+ when AION comes out.
by the way iv installed the game onto my computer and it will not work,
it says that i dont no have apporpriate permission.
its vista sp1. iv tryed to run as admin bust still no use.
Bot problem was really bad
Bot problem was really bad for long time as well as I believe it has
been also in Lineage 2, but they did get some new methods to battle
that problem in Lineage 1 like couple months back and managed to squash
a lot of the bots. So I am happy to announce that Lineage 1 can now be
recommended even to new faces as that problem is decently handled now
and is hopefully improving as I type.
If it's the grinding you like, then Lineage is definitely right game for you, hehe. The good thing (or bad thing, depends who you ask from) in Lineage is that you can play also solo relative efficiently if you so wish for. No one will practically ever reach the level limit, but the curve will raise really fast around level 80 or so and already 65-70 can be thought as a high level taking long time to achieve. Thus the grinding will practically never end as you have got used to with Lineage 2.
You won't get experience by questing and the quests are rare to begin with. You however are able to get some useful items from the few quests in the game. At first I truly recommend to check how to get Skeleton Boots as they can increase the fun factor for the beginning until you can maintain the Haste effect without them. Here are the links to LineageDB guides: Hidden Valley and Singing Island. So the leveling in Lineage is done the traditional way by slaughtering all kind of evil critters and monsters near towns, wandering in the forests, hiding in the shadows of the caves, lurking in the deep waters of the ocean... well, you get the picture.
If you plan to play as long as 6 months, Constitution elf would be good character to start with. And I myself (used to) play in LoA and can say there are quite a few good people there. New players are usually not attacked unless you're unlucky and happen to run into some player having bad day. There is also a place called Turtle Island you can go into to have safe hunting until level 32 or something like that. Or if you find some pledge willing to take new players, you can ask them to help you to drive the PK off. But yeah, it's very unlikely you will get attacked unless you start causing trouble, like taking other people's drops or attacking the monsters others are already hitting.
What comes to the problem of Lineage's client software not running, I surely hope you are not having 64 bit version of Vista as Lineage simply does not run with that :-/ If you however are having the 32 bit version and the instructions in the link previously given to you does not seem to work, you might want to contact the official support. Instructions on how to do so can be found example in this thread of the official message boards.
That's all I can give the directions now and hope you get the problem solved and journeys started in the lands of Aden.

thanks for the help again mate. allot of usfull info
but
oh no. are you serious :(
dam i was looking forward to playing this game :(
so its 100% impossible to run it on 64bit..
Awh, sorry to hear that. You
Awh, sorry to hear that. You having the 64 bit version of Vista will make it a lot more difficult and I am not sure has anyone got it to work in that operating system as at least NCSoft has said that Lineage does not run in it. You might try to run some 32 bit operating system if you have one, like Vista 32 bit or preferably XP, in virtual machine and try to run the game through that.
Microsoft offers free virtual machine runnable in several Windows versions if you want to try out. Another popular software for virtual machines is VMware, but the Microsoft's software should be good enough if it supports your operating system. Now I have not tried this myself nor have heard anyone else getting successfully around this problem for Lineage with such a virtual machine, but if you really want to try out this game you could as well give this possible solution a go. I would be interested to hear comments if this indeed works for this problem.

il probably start in land of aden if i dont get ganked all the time.
but if i do il go to Ken Rauhel. :)
Nope, Lineage simply does
Nope, Lineage simply does not run on 64bit Vista systems period. It sucks but it's true, or I'd be using my other Laptop to play Lineage.
If you so happen to play on a different Computer/OS and start on Depardieu, don't hesitate to give me a heads up and I'll help you out :P

The grind has become easier over the years in this game too, obtaining levels that were only options for the hardcore players can been accomplished by the casual gamer (casual being to me 1-3 hours a day) in a few months time now. With the new update comes another hunting area to ease that grind even more.
I don't see It as a bad thing, its a way to get new blood into the game, I know i wouldnt want to start a game where i would have to grind a year plus just to "catch up" with my friends.
hi, thanks for all the help

Ironic how advancement in
Ironic how advancement in technology leaves the good old stuff behind.. jeeze.. at least have advancement where it can run everything with no problem.. that's what I would really call advancement stupid piece of 64bit junk XD
